Women’s sport and new event formats are driving audience growth
Examining sports-viewing in 45 markets between September 2024 and August 2025 found that major live events continue to pull in large audiences — but the real story is the rise of women’s competitions and new formats.
Key findings:
The UEFA Women’s European Championship led the year’s sports audiences in both Germany and the UK.
The final stage of the Women’s Tour de France recorded an average audience of 2.7 million (up from 1.4 million the previous year), peaking at 4.4 million and a 41 % share on France 2.
Traditional strongholds such as the Super Bowl LIX still delivered massive numbers (126.7 million viewers in the US).
Football remains dominant in many markets (49 % of sports viewing in Italy, 71 % in Spain), but the strong growth of women’s sport signals a change in viewer behavior.
