What is hacktivism?

Hacktivism combines the words “hacking” and “activism” to describe acts where individuals or groups use computer tools to advance social or political causes. Methods range from website defacement and distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks to leaks of internal data. Targets often include governments, corporations or institutions perceived as violating rights or norms.

This guide emphasises that hacktivism occupies a grey zone: while some acts are seen by perpetrators as protest, many violate law and raise serious security risks.  For digital-content creators, media houses or tech platforms, understanding hacktivist tactics is important because even non-profit motives can bring major reputational and operational risk

🔧 Digital Tip

When streaming live sports internationally or using a VPN to access region-restricted content, always check both your DNS and your IP-leak status. Even if your VPN reports “connected”, DNS queries might still leak to your ISP, alerting regional blockers. Use an independent leak-test (e.g., IPleak.net) while streaming. Enable “kill switch” and set the VPN to “full tunnel” mode during live events to avoid automatic fallback to your native connection during drops.
