The FIA is facing criticism after reinstating Victor Kiryanov, a former Russian general sanctioned by the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, to its rule-making council. Kiryanov, who previously served as Russia’s deputy minister of internal affairs, had stepped down in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem invited him back for the June 11 meeting of the World Motorsport Council. According to HM Treasury documents, Kiryanov’s sanctions include an asset freeze, travel ban, director disqualification, and trust-services restrictions, as he is listed among those accused of supporting Russia’s government or actions undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty.
